However, my own experience is that they do not remain available right up until departure as they once did. At some point prior to departure (I suspect at check-in close, but haven't verified that) EF will start returning an error. Which is a little frustrating if you want to check whether a seat block has remained in place.
Yes, I had this on Sunday when flying out to Miami - a few hours before the flight (maybe 6 hours) the seatmap search returned an error (it seemed like the data was no longer available or similar) - I tried a few times after with the same result
