A good friend worked for UA in BKK when the service was discontinued in 2012. It was not because of unrest. UA told the staff they were making significant profit on the NRT<>BKK route, but calculated they could make MORE profit using that frame in another market, even after the contribution for the NH codeshare was accounted for. That was when a 744 or 772 was dedicated (usually came from ORD, IAD, or SFO). Now with the more fuel-efficient 787-9, and many more on order, the calculations have changed from the cost side. What demand will be is the big question. We'll know in a year or so when UA decides if they'll go with a LAX or SFO non-stop once more 787-9s are on hand.
For a little more color, after the NRT-BKK flight was dropped I questioned this explanation about UA dropping a profitable flight. I was told that NH could fly this route more profitably than UA ever could and UA had other routes where they needed the plane. FWIW
