The maximum is about £1500. If they paid you that and the stuff inside is worth more, then I wouldn't blink at fedexing it back. No need to contact BA.

But my query is how did it get to the hostel? Did someone just deliver it recently? If the latter, then you might be able to get it 'redelivered' by going through the people who delivered it. Airlines are always having to ship bags back from addresses and send them on to the next port of call when the intended recipient has moved on.
Just don't mention you reported it irretrievably lost and they may just dumbly send it straight to your house. You may need the original lost baggage claim number.
