e.g. currently, AA flies to both SAN and CLD (from PHX). A random November date shows $100-$115 one way to SAN and $267 to CLD. Both main cabin tix (not BE), with similar departure times (within 20 minutes)
if proximity is important, then CLD access may win out without the consideration of fare and associated costs.
And don't forget TIJ! Not sure how the PHXTIJ flight does, but everytime I've looked its been cheaper than XXXPHXSAN. Granted its international and you do need a passport, but with CrossBorder Xpress it's a viable option if you have to get to San Diego for cheap, and I'd rather deal with crossing the border than the 5/405/15 with SNA/ONT, especially if you live in South Bay/Chula Vista. I haven't done it yet, but I'm happy that UA added CLD, and at that from somewhere other than LAX (since that would involve a double connection)
