We will likely book through FHR / American Express to get their benefits. (early check in and late check out are needed thanks to our unusual itinerary - nothing else is terribly important.)
Would like to have a hotel that might have a local car service (pick up / drop off within a short radius of the hotel) or somewhere we can just walk out and feel we are in historic Shanghai.
And in case of inclement weather, a great in house restaurant for dinner would be a bonus!
Any recommendations?
I am looking at Waldorf Astoria (because of the location of the Bund), The Edition (just because I have heard so much of the brand, but never stayed there), and the Langham (it has fabulous reviews!)
But open to FTer recommendations!
If you fancy walking around the Former French Concession, my recs would be Capella, 12 Hengshan, the Puli, and the SL. That having been said, since you're only in town for one night, staying on the Bund (Penn, Peace, or WA) wouldn't be such a bad thing. As others have mentioned, the Bund is about as touristy as it gets, but it is kind of nice to take in the skyline and the river traffic. Plus, it's pretty easy to take taxis to more interesting areas. The metro can also get you fairly close (10 minute walk to/from E. Nanjing Rd on Line 2 or Yuyuan on Line 10).
