Only when the airline can proof that they did reasonable measure to take a spare crew to Boston / mobilize an existing crew in Boston (might be challenging as BOS is not a regular B748 destination; but they could have tried getting a crew from EWR/JFK to BOS).
Only then it's extraordinary.
Not sure why people seem to always defend airlines. - That the airline operates a wild zoo of aircrafts is also nothing that helps defining this as "extraordinary".
