The point you may be missing is that you can use the GUF to book directly into the cabin you want to travel in without worrying about availability in the cabin that you are notionally “upgrading” from. So if you want to use your GUF to book in First, you only need to look for A class availability. No need for the joker, as you don’t need to open up a seat in Club.

that’s weird isn’t it? I’d have presumed you would need biz class availability and then first class availability to be upgraded.. sort of step wise approach
