As a fairly well-traveled German, I wouldn't say it's more prominent in Germany than anywhere else. Decent protein doesn't need a lot of sauce, sauce is often used to hide quality issues.

That said, the Beef was excellent in quality & cooked Medium Rare as requested

The only country I know of where they often turn a great steak into something that resembles an Île flottante is South Africa. Definitely not Germany.
