Thats really interesting , we had the same issue going to the Gold Coast and the flight was cancelled the night before due to engineering , but as it was before we started the trip they would not assist , or cover our lost night in the Gold Coast. Even tried a second review but they declined it so we lost a night of hotel at our cost. You did well to get it paid out for the same situation.

That’s very disappointing to hear, given the reason for cancellation was within NZ’s control (as it was in my case). I definitely would have pushed back if they told me no and escalated to premium support if I needed to.
Were you able to claim through travel insurance? Although being an airline fault, I’d assume most insurers would have pushed you go through NZ regardless.
