AA definitely can open up the requisite T/U space on its own metal to work with a partner award however depending on the nature of the changes and what's needed to fix it this can sometimes be an uphill battle when the schedule change was done by the partner, and not AA.
I find the hill is much less uphill if you present to AA exactly what you need, I find it's best to say "Here is what happened, here is what I need, here is how you can help", eg
Qatar had a schedule change on flight QR12345 and now my AA flight AA12345 will not connect. I see there is a flight AA54321 that will get me there to connect in time. Could you please rebook me onto that flight?
If you just tell AA to fix it without presenting a solution, they are going to find the easiest solution, which is often that there is nothing they can do.
