To be fair, I've seen nothing yet to indicate whether the outage was software- or hardware-induced. If the latter, it's certainly not fair to blame the developers for this one.

However, after 30+ years in IT, I believe it is fair to lay the blame at the feet of the planners. If you have an operation of any sort that is extremely dependent on IT, you MUST have contingency plans for failure. I remember that in 1990, give or take a year, AA lost their reservations system for 3 days because someone accidentally deleted the database. There was no continuous backup taking place, and it took them that long to restore all the pointers by hand. There is no excuse for that. Remember the old Midas ads? "You can pay me now, or you can pay me later!"
