You've just explained why they need to pay more. I agree - their systems are extremely complex and require top talent to manage them. But when you have AS paying low-$100k for senior software talent, and AMZN and MSFT are paying those same people $350k total compensation, they simply aren't going to attract the workers necessary to keep the existing system working and build the next generation of IT at the company.
I agree with all of this, of course.
I just worry that some people think these things are easier fixes than they are. It requires a multi-year, many tens of millions investment in staff, physical infrastructure, cloud services, and tons of other things. They need to do it, but even once they do, improvement is gonna take a while.
