Agreed, though the Metrocard stored the transfer on the card itself and OMNY calculates the transfer on the backend. I remember reading somewhere that the MTA was in discussion with Cubic about an enhancement to send more data to the turnstiles, but I don't know if that actually went anywhere.

Also, there seems to be some decoupling between the turnstile card read and the actual accounting on the backend, as we've seen both with the recent delayed charges and the "upgrade" a couple of weeks ago where you couldn't add value to OMNY cards over the weekend. (From what I could tell, it was possible to run a negative OMNY card balance until the system came fully back up.) I suspect all this makes it more complicated to display things like transfers, prepaid balances, or whether you hit the fare cap.
