The competition from Qantas and other US carriers is clearly making inroads on Air nz’s US routes. I’d say Cam Wallace is on a mission to take market share off Air nz via the US routes and using Jetstar discounting. Also all the costs involved including sustained high interest rates, sagging nzd, 10 days sick leave, extra stat holidays are impacting nz businesses a lot on their bottom line. Not to mention the juggernaut that’s the Qantas frequent flyer program. (Not known as the golden handcuffs for nothing…)
Air NZ having aircraft but not operating engines to hang on them, so cannot be used is having a big effect., And will be that way for months,

QF are adept at using non AU crew on some long hauls (~cheap labour). A very common long running complaint by the AU transport unions.
Here in Melbourne we get a day off for a Tuesday horse race. Few people work on the Monday. And another day off on the Friday before the AFL Aussie Rules grand final (Sept)
