I wouldn't know personally as I have only ever flown as booked, been upgraded, or volunteered for another flight with some compensation, never upgraded for cash at OLCI or at the airport.
I recall being upgraded at OLCI 24 hours before, think LHR-ICN. This was a very pleasant suprise but pre-Covid.
Given most of my routes are CW only now the upgrade lottery is not an option, but it was always fun going to the gate to board and waiting for a beep (or once in Vancouver being called in lounge to get new boarding pass), or not.
My attitude was always to be happy what I paid for anyway.
