Very disappointing changes for the Platinum card, I'm likely planning on canceling in January. Note that there's a 30-day notice period, but P2 has some travel in January so I want to make sure he still has Platinum status for that trip.
1. Amex in France is not accepted in most of my daily shopping, so while the 5XP/5000€ could be an OK value proposition, I've found acceptance to be around 5% unless I can force it via PayPal etc. I know they want us to use the card more, and I would be happy to if it were accepted, but cutting benefits and then tying them to spend leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
2. As others have noted, all of the benefits they're adding seem to not apply to Platinums (edge-case lounge access? extra bags?) or are super vague.
3. Lowering the earn rate to 1.3/€ is honestly just a jerk move. It wasn't a great rate to begin with, and I am truly baffled how people are spending large amounts on Amex in France outside of with Air France directly.
I'm lucky enough to have US/Canada cards (60XP/year for $89 after spending $15k USD without foreign transaction fees at 1.5X earning; $132 CAD for 30XP) that blow these out of the water. The only unique thing is Platinum for 2 and I'm not sure I see the value proposition anymore.
