Reservations “ineligible” for NUAs?

I have a reservation for 10 nights this December at a vacation destination Marriott family hotel (I am not going to name the hotel for my own safety/privacy so if that’s a deal breaker for others’ thoughts, sorry). The stay is over the holidays.

This is considered a luxury hotel within Marriott, is within the USA, and the nightly rate is very high (cash). I have a cash reservation, made directly through the hotel as this hotel sells out typically and has all sorts of rules regarding stays during this period (re minimum nights, dates available for check in, etc).

I have 10 NUAs I want to apply towards this reservation. I know I’m deluding myself but I figured I’d try. Plus they unhelpfully expire at the end of December and will go unused.

when I go to apply the NUAs I received a message that my stay was ineligible for NUAs.

I did not think properties could black-out NUAs (especially on a “regular” cash rate). Has that changed?
