I am also planning a trip to San Antonio and I just watched a program on the NPS Spanish Missions some of whose members are descended from the original native Americans became congregants when they were started in and around the 1730’s. They seem to have an active presence and nowhere else is there 5 original missions within 3 miles of one another!
Also, if you do venture up to the Hill country you absolutely have to visit the museum of the Pacific War — The US WWII Pacific campaign against Japanese in Fredericksburg, TX.. it is the most comprehensive and user friendly museum on the subject, even better than the wing devoted to same in New Orleans.
