Also, unlear if I use the standard compliant 22" carry on for ANA if my backpack counts as a personal item as it fits under the seat. It does with United and I jusr want to make sure I am compliant in Osaka before I get on the plane.

There is only 1 non stop to Denver a day. I know if I miss it, United will book me on a plane through LAX or SFO and then Denver. Going through customs/immigration is so much easier when you go to your ride home when complete rather than working your way back through baggage check etc.
Carry ons are rarely an issue in Japan, as people by and large check luggage or use luggage forwarding, so it does not end up in cabin in same way as it does elsewhere. Also helped that all domestic ANA tickets include luggage.
