It would not be difficult to justify the spend. Unless you are buying refundable tickets, your E+ fees would be nonrefundable in the event of a voluntary change, as opposed to complete freedom with Gold. In addition to international lounge access, you would also get business class check-in on *A partners and goldtrack security, both of which can be very helpful in a crowded airport.
