As suggested above, read the last dozen or so posts in the Amex thread.
You may now be able to call a UK freephone number 24-7 in order to book return legs.
Depending on your BAC level I might be tempted to ring up a little earlier than 5 minutes so that you have a chance to get through the phone wait before getting an agent.

You experience of ringing the US number is not unique.
