Having lived in NYC for 28 years, the most common approaches are to Runway 22. On light wind/calm days, the approach is preceeded by a low pass north up the Hudson River before a right turn around to land. Best seat for a Manhattan view on this approach is on the right side, and it occurs 60% of the time.

On gusty days, the path is more easterly over Brooklyn and the North Shore of Long Island before a left turn to land on 22 (in effect this morning). Best seat here is on the left, and it occurs 20% of the time. 10% of the time, the approach is straight in to Runway 4 (left side seat best for view), and the remaining 10% of the time the approach is similar to that into Runway 4, but continues past the airport for a sharp low, left-turn bank over Citi Field for a landing on Runway 31 (also left side seat preferred).
