This hasn't worked the few times I tried it, but I just deleted and reinstalled the app (mostly to get rid of all the bloated documents and data) and it worked upon reinstalling.

Same. The only downside of reinstalling (and another complaint) is the need to readd all my favorite airports, over which UA introduces more frustration because clicking the heart icon from the search results almost never actually adds it as a favorite but instead selects it as the origin or destination airport for your "search."
