I don't see this a lot different to BA letting you buy Avios (and I imagine a lot of other airlines, BA was just first that came to mind) and sometimes they have points purchasing promotions where the points are cheaper to buy than normal.
Most schemes that allow points purchase are not value unless there is a heavily discounted special offer. The difference with Airpoints is that they are generally valued that $1AP is equivalent $1 value. Other schemes can more easily change the cost of redemptions and it is likely more oblique to most.
