Guess the safe thing for me to do is buy some APD before the due date.
I doubt that Air NZ would let everyone join airpoints, use any credit card to buy airpoints, then give them the ability to buy redemptions on other carriers at at cheaper price than their own fares on a regular basis. For a start it would make partner redemptions almost impossible to get as competition would be so vast. I doubt other star alliance members would be happy with this and think it’s rather unlikely although given some of the other decisions made by Air NZ since Covid it’s difficult to be certain.
