You chose your airline based on its schedule and how much you liked its service.
I have flown Spirit and Frontier for specific destinations. The rules are not as complicated using the websites. The ala carte system is obvious with diagrams displaying the included service levels. I purchased a special bag to maximize my personal item allowance. Before deregulation we could not afford to fly. Now we have flown to Iceland as a last minute trip.
