I ended up only getting to the counter just before 5pm, so I didn't try first-hand what would happen had I arrived before 4:45pm. However, I asked the check-in agent wearing JAL uniform, and she confirmed one would be allowed to check in and check bags for any AA flight that day at any time the AA counter is open, including the time in the morning.
