Implications of a stop over of <24 hours in LHR vs in-transit.

Hi,

I've noticed some award booking show availability on BA.com when a stop-over is selected with less than 24hrs between arrival and departure that do not show as available when looking for a direct flight. Example LYS-LHR-PDX. On a given date there isn't award availability when booking without a stop-over (arrive in LHR 19:35 and depart for PDX the next day at 13:45) however there is availability if a stop-over is selected with the same flights/days/time.

Does anyone know if calling BA would allow booking it as in-transit of <24hrs? Maybe my understanding of in-transit of <24 hours is outdated.

If they wouldn't book it as a single itinerary with <24 hour transit are there implications with booking it with a stopover? Examples that I could think of but might not really occur are two record locators resulting in loss of protection if the first flight from LYS-LHR is cancelled, not allowing bags to be booked all the way through, implications for EC/UK261 compensation, etc. Are these really impacts/risks and are there any other impacts of booking an award with a stopover of less than 24hrs vs a single itinerary that I haven't thought of?

Thanks so much for all the expertise and insights that are always provided on questions like these.

All my best, Craig
