Hundreds of hotel stays and I've never personally experienced this before.

However I have heard this is a practice at certain properties of some low end hotel brands in the US (Days Inn, Knights Inn, America's Best Value Inn). These are the same places who like to do things like copy your credit card and/or ID on a copy machine and put it into some overflowing file cabinet behind the desk.
