That's not true. For a voluntary change, i.e. one initiated by the OP, that logic would apply. But for an involuntary change, that's not the case. If OP is on a single PTY-LAX fare with connections or stopovers at MEX/GDL, then skipping GDL would be an involuntary change precipitated by AM's cancellation of the initial MEX-LAX flight.

The 24 hours may or may not be relevant depending on the fare rules. Generally, for many airlines and fares, a stopovers means more than 24 hours; anything less would be a "connection". "Layover" doesn't really have any defined meaning anywhere in the industry, it's just something people use in conversation.

But 24 hours may not always be the relevant threshold, even if you're crossing a border. I'm not familiar with the intricacies of AM's fare rules or general terms and conditions, but as an example from elsewhere in the industry, Air Canada limits connections to 10-12 hours on tickets within Canada and the US; more than that and it's a stopover, even though it's <24 hours.

That being said, I took a quick look at the fare rules for a few of AM's PTY-LAX fares. PTY-MEX-GDL-LAX is a permitted routing, and I didn't see any modification to the stopover rules that would suggest your connections would count as stopovers even though they're <24 hours.

This doesn't conclusively prove that you do have a single PTY-LAX fare, but it's certainly possible.

If you do have a single PTY-LAX fare, then as I said above, your request to remove one of the connection points is reasonable and should come without repricing. If that is the case, I have no insights in to how to get booking.com to see it; this kind of thing is why I avoid OTAs like the plague.

Another possible approach though: what would it cost to buy a new ticket? If it's the same or similar, you might consider just having booking.com refund you and buy yourself a new ticket.
