I suspect that many of the perpetrators of this practice are in the lounge on gifted cards.
If something is earned it's more likely to be respected and cherished.
Or the opposite. Someone who has gone out of their way to earn status may want every penny of value. There will be people who have received cards from friends/family who won't really care about it that much. It'll be nice to be able to go into a lounge, sure but many probably don't think that much about the whole thing.
