Newbie question.

I canceled an April 2025 flight and have received the flight credit for it which will be expiring April 2026. I may not have another UA flight planned for a while but may have a trip to ORD in July 2026 which I can use the credit. However, since the trip is so far out, I would like to know if I book now and change the plan later. What is the policy for the flight credit then? Will I get a refund as flight credit if I have cancel the future flight?
