Anecdotally I have done this. Separate tickets, CX to HKG, stopover in HKG around 25h and then onward with AY. KA agent in CAN checked through to final without a complaint.
Now, this was 10 years ago, but both CX and HKG can do this. No idea if they still do it and I guess no way of knowing before arriving at the airport.


And this check-in wasn't the worst of that trip... Ten seasons of platinum
