I sometimes arrive at hotel separately from my partner (usually because I'm at work). I always assume the front desk won't give her a key unless I've asked to have her added to the reservation. Which is exactly what I do anytime we want to make sure she can get in before I arrive.

And the issue is not that particular scenario, but rather allowing FD to deviate from rule that they only give keys to a registered guest. There all kinds of excuses someone might offer once you start allowing exceptions to the hard and fast rule. Next thing you know, my ne'er do well brother (I'm making this up) is in my room stealing valuables to sell for drugs. Never underestimate people's capacity to pull a scam - this stuff really happens.
