I understand that if originating outside the US, I would likely have to pay a change fee, and that was OK.. but what a mess! Somehow, in the cancellation, both credits were divorced from my mileage plus account, so they were not associated with my mileage plus number and did not show up in my account. I then called in to the 1K line, after an hour on the phone and trying various “work arounds” the agent told me she really couldn’t even access my credits, because they were not affiliated with my mileage plus account, and in any case, I could only use one of the credits at a time, not both. I wrote to customer care, asking them to combine both credits into an ETC, so that I could use them to rebook my trip. After several back-and-forth’s, they were adamant that under no circumstances could they combine them, and under no circumstances could they ever convert them to an ETC. I was told this several times. As I now wanted to book a round-trip ticket, I could not use the value of both credits at the same time. I called the 1K line, and the agent was sympathetic, but confirmed that there was no way to use both credits on the same reservation. I would have to use one credit to book a trip, and the other credit to book a separate trip. There was no way to combine the credits, even though they were both future flight credits, unused, in R class, and bought from United. I also kept receiving a message that “ we are not able to use this credit here, please follow these steps to rebook” which continually led me to a blank page. I was finally forced to book two separate trips, in order to use both credits.
For anyone that might encounter the same issue in the future: this seems to be a particular issue with international trips / trips in a different currency.
I also have two FFCs, both purchased on United.com, both in my name, both in the same currency (GBP), but was told repeatedly than I cannot combine them, despite the wording in their policy.
One of them is expiring this week so I'm going to book a flight to extend it. I'll keep pushing to try to combine them and will report back...
