Vietjet is also one to look for, since they fly from BKK and have many flights per day. Also some that don't make you connect thru DMK or BKK.
The only time I flew Thai Lion was to KUL in a typhoon/monsoon. Made it.
About the same using Expedia.co.th, better pricing and yes separate tickets are advisable.
