Personal pet peeve of mine. Even "seasoned" travelers and bloggers mix this up all the time.
Remember well discussion about CO 888 when it launched, where people were complaining about getting LESS miles (redeemable and status - anyone remember earning status by mile?) because BOS-EWR-PEK was shorter than EWR-PEK
And remember even better the "direct" UA flight DFW-NRT with "gauge change in SFO"
OTOH, on different dates there was also "direct" SFO-SIN (IIRC) with no gauge change (747 on both legs), but plane change at NRT.
