I hope UA is notifying travelers on affected flights beforehand. I could see a scenario in which an unaware traveler walks up to the gate right before doors close (whether of their own choice or due to a late inbound connection), is caught by this new requirement, and the GAs have to either delay closing the door or kick them off the flight.
I'd also be pretty irritated if this boarding delay caused me to have to put my bag further back in the cabin, or even worse forced a gate check. Personally, I try to minimize waiting around in gate areas, and if I need overhead space my optimal arrival time at the gate is right at the very end of whichever boarding group I'm eligible for. If I don't need overhead space, my target arrival time is just before doors close.
