Since now the starting point is Zurich, what are the options for us for the first two nights? Trying to stay close to the area where we can take a cable car and go up in the mountains for half a day. Should I look for hotels in the Interlaken area? Can you recommend one or two sight seeing lifts?

Everyone thinks it's the most boring place on earth. Compared to London, Paris or New York, they have a point. But:
Berne might actually not be so bad for you. Close enough by train to Interlaken and Jungfraujoch, but with backup options for when the weather is really bad. Even Lucerne is within easy reach. Way cheaper than Lucerne or Interlaken, and better food options. If all else fails, go watch a Hockey game at berne or Fribourg, the Swiss league is one of the best outside the NHL.
