If UA really wanted to get creative they would have started flying to Inverness, Scotland for access to the Highlands, Orkney, & Shetland plus capturing the O&G traffic that goes into ABZ/INV.
And the golf traffic for Royal Dornoch and the ever expanding draw to the Highlands. Not sure if the runway at INV could support the Max departing to EWR but it would be great if so. Getting to the area is a bit of a slog considering some of the best golf in the world is nearby.
As for GLA, it’s 45 min from EDI and buses/trains run constantly. There is a pocket of great golf to the SW of GLA to help this route. I can see many a travel agent booking their clients on the Max to GLA….most golfers will only become aware of this at the gate in EWR and so what if they can’t walk for the first 2 days. 😂
