I have not flown directly to/from China back to the US for over 4 years now. I have been doing them via HKG/SIN/HND as part of my multi-stop business travel to the region.
Yes, pretty much: booking it all on UA is still 'stupid money'.
I've been mostly flying to PEK via HND also, but on separate tickets, and sometimes using award flights for the Japan-China legs.
Scored upgrades for the domestic East Coast-SFO/LAX leg a few times, but otherwise avoid that routing like the plague.
For the last 3 years it's been ~$3500 + miles/PlusPoints R/T to get from East Coast-Japan in J and E or J for Japan-Beijing, but usually
a lot of time spent trying to get those all booked.
