Co-incidence or was the fraud actually related to the credit card charge in your opinion? I'm not sure how the two could be linked directly but not 100% clued up on the payment mechanism and what details are taken when.

Overall I don't like the idea of hotels putting actual charges through and then refunding but ultimately it doesn't make a difference in terms of available credit on the card or the final charge on your credit card bill. I would expect this to be fully explained up front before payment is requested however.
