I'd argue Japan - PEK - Japan is way overpriced and the schedule is not really that great. Also, flying PEK-HND on NH is horrible, as it's uncertain if it arrives at HND in T2 or T3 (can be either, but more T2 than T3), and the transit-transfer from T2 to T3 is horrible, IME.
Also, ICN-PEK is usually a lot cheaper than Tokyo-PEK for some reason.
(...and lets not even talk about all the problems with connecting via LAX or SFO.)
Are UA still charging unrealistic high fares for direct flights from US to PVG/PEK? Is the demand really that high?
I have not flown directly to/from China back to the US for over 4 years now. I have been doing them via HKG/SIN/HND as part of my multi-stop business travel to the region.
