Insanely low PQP/award mileage earnings vs. cost of fare - what gives?

Hi all - I booked LHR-SFO roundtrip, originally wanting to do all Polaris (but it was around 9,000 GBP, and out of budget). Side-note: some random dates between London and SF have been incredibly expensive these days!

Instead, I had to book one-way Business and return in Economy. This STILL ended up costing 6,980 GBP.

I reviewed the accrual for this trip and its showing:
  • LHR-SFO - Polaris leg (1,611 PQP)
  • SFO-LHR - Economy leg (537 PQP)
In total, even as 1K this flight will net only 18,788 award miles. This is crazy relative to the cost.

I have never seen a disparity remotely this large between PQP and cost of ticket. What is going on here? Thank you in advance
