ARL seems to be best avoided. Had an O/N in Bangkok earlier this year and even though we booked a hotel right by Phaya Thai (Sukosol, not the Eastin Grand but close enough), we ended up taking a Grab car from/to BKK. Even if you get a seat (not assured even getting on a Phaya Thai) they're pretty uncomfortable.
