Whether or not you can do it is location specific. Vanilla branded giftcards are the most reliable, others are problematic
Anything over 1k (including fee) triggers all sorts of extra ID entries so is best avoided IMO
There is tons of nonsense in this thread with people extrapolating one-off issues into global truths. The only way to know for sure is trial and error at your local stores
