If you made DM, they certainly have no questions on who you are (because you're checked at check-in desks/gates).
You haven't done the obvious Amex. I'm not sure whether HSBC - even non-HK HSBC - attracts the same unwanted attention.
So maybe they overreacted to the two adds. I'm not sure how they'll handle that.
(This part is pure speculation) Have those two members also been obtaining redemptions from other Cathay members? That's all I can think of.
