getting from the international terminal to the domestic terminal landside is a bigger pain than it sounds like. there is a shuttle bus but it's pretty sporadic (every 30 minutes?), it may be easier to just uber and it would definitely be a lot easier if your friend can avoid checking bags at all (then they can just re-clear security at the international terminal and take the plane train back to whatever concourse (T most likely).
I'd add that while I've complained about the Intl Shuttle A LOT here, the past couple of times it's been somewhat better. It's still a long schlepp between domestic and international, but the shuttles were coming one right after another. It would take a while to get everybody loaded with their massive amounts of luggage, but another one would pull right up.
