I think we can lay a lot of the blame on your collegues. Your paper had the McConnel story on the front page for about 3 days! On doubt there were good things being done during this time but obviously they were not a "juicy" as a bit of mud slinging. Why don't your bosses go the full hog and move to a tabloid size and change the colour of the title to RED!!
