Had you not already said you’re planning to be up front, the biggest benefit of going via HNL is that HNL-GUM upgrades are among the easiest in the system in all but peak times around major military exercises. Granted, sfo-hnl can be dicey for upgrades, but one might be able to buy a cash upgrade on that segment and come out ahead dollar -wise.(Although, GUM flights are notoriously pricey).
Personally I’d rather arrive at 6p and be checked into a hotel by 7:30p vice routing via TYO and getting in close to midnight, if those are your options.
Assuming you’re going back to sfo, the return times are more favorable for routing via TYO IMO. The HNL flight leaves GUM very early, with check in cutoff adding to the morning pain. Whereas you can depart at 1130a and easily connect to an overnight flight.
